The Hayes Valley Art Works is a temporary installation that calls itself “a community creation space.” It is the current occupant of one of the last remnants of the now-demolished Central Freeway, and recently opened its doors to the public as a community gathering, teaching and learning site. It will be operative until a building project on that block takes over the space to build apartment buildings, so it won’t be available for this kind of creative exploration forever. As examples, the site is home to a new labyrinth, classes are taught in pop-up containers, and its first exhibit, entitled “New Quarters —Inaugural Exhibit” will be up through July 9. The space, ever-changing, is open every day except Tuesday from noon to 5:00 p.m., and the public is welcome to come and explore what neighborhood artists are up to.
